The "Mass Effect" of Mass Effect 3

This has been happening for a while now, but yes, gamers rabidly demand a better ending/set of endings for Mass Effect 3. I wonder if people would have done the same if the Harry Potter series had been as disappointing. I also then have to wonder if this is a function of gamers' role as active participants in a narrative, as opposed to the passive nature of a reader of a novel.
